Find a Carer/Personal Assistant  


Opportunity to work in the beautiful Island of Guernsey.
Kevin has 2 carers. He is a professional man paralysed due to a spinal injury and is wheel chair bound. This is a live in position with friendly working conditions.


Applicants must speak good English, have a working visa for the UK and a clean driving license. Duties to include personal care, housekeeping, driving and some physiotherapy. No formal nursing training is required, but could be beneficial. Suit fit enthusiastic 24-34 year old, non smoking.

The duration of the job is initially for 12 months initially and this can easily be extended if both parties agree. It usually takes one-two months to become very good at the routine, but as there is another trained carer that person will help train them.

A Day in the life of Kevin
Generally duties will involve personal care, helping exercise, practical help, driving and assisting to attend social and work activities.

06:45:

Intimate care, followed by leg and finger physiotherapy, dressing, putting into the wheelchair (using an overhead hoist), grooming, breakfast, some upper body exercises and then getting me presentable for work.

08:15:

Drive 4 miles to work

12:30:

Pick up from office and come home

Afternoon:

The rest of the day there is no real time table. When home from work there is a need to give a bit of maintenance and being replacement hands. Such things as check and empty the catheter leg bag, get repositioned in the chair and have lunch. To help the body relax, sometime during the afternoon to spend a further thirty minutes doing some stretches and stand against a standing frame.

Evening:

Prepare a light meal and eventually put into bed, shave, undress, check for any marks on the skin and leave twisted onto side. During the night may need to empty catheter bag and twist onto other side.

Apart from the care and physiotherapy, there are some household chores too. The house needs to be kept clean, washing and ironing will also needs to be
done. With two of you sharing the household duties each week, daily this part of the job shouldn't need more than 60 minutes.

The home is a three bedroomed detached house. You will have your own private bedroom, furnished with double bed, TV, wardrobe. The bathroom is shared between carers and all bedding & towels are provided.
